Examination: Echocardiography – an ultrasound scan of the heart
An echocardiogram (ultrasound scan of the heart) allows us to assess your heart valves and your heart’s pumping capacity. If reduced pumping capacity or malfunctioning heart valves are suspected, our cardiologists can examine and treat you within a short time.
What you need to know about echocardiography
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart that shows the structure of your heart and how its individual parts function.
You may benefit from an echocardiogram of your heart if there is a suspicion of reduced pumping capacity (heart failure) or malfunctioning heart valves (heart murmur).
An echocardiogram is performed whilst you are lying on your left side with your upper body bare.
The cardiologist will apply a small amount of gel to the skin around the heart area and uses an ultrasound probe to scan your heart.
The examination is painless and is expected to take approximately half an hour.
