Examination: Echocardiography – an ultrasound scan of the heart
An echocardiogram (an ultrasound scan of the heart) allows us to assess your heart valves and your heart’s pumping function. Do you suspect you may have a heart valve condition, or are you concerned about heart failure or an aortic aneurysm? Our cardiologists are ready to examine and treat you within a short time.
What you need to know about echocardiography
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart that shows the structure of your heart and how its individual parts function.
The examination provides information about the size of the heart, the movement of the valves and the walls of the heart chambers, and blood flow through the various parts of the heart.
You may benefit from an echocardiogram if you suspect you have heart failure, an aortic aneurysm or a heart valve condition.
An echocardiogram is performed whilst you are lying on your left side with your upper body bare.
The cardiologist will apply a small amount of gel to the skin around the heart area and uses an ultrasound probe to scan your heart.
The examination is painless and is expected to take approximately half an hour.
